Ghana v Uruguay World Cup Group H Betting Guide

A super final round match in Group H will see Ghana versus Uruguay in an African and South American tie. The corresponding fixture in Group H being played simultaneously will be Portugal versus South Korea to decide which teams will qualify for the round of 16. Ghana versus Uruguay is scheduled to take place on Friday 2nd December at the Al Janoub Stadium. Ghana is ranked 60th in the world while Uruguay are a far higher 13th.

The Teams’ Routes to the World Cup

Ghana

The form book for Ghana has not been looking so rosy during the past 12 months. During this period Ghana has played 16 international matches winning 5, drawing 6 and losing 5 games. Towards the end of 2021, they only lost 1 game in 6 from the beginning of September, however, during 2022 they have only managed 1 win in 10. This does not bode well for Ghana and their chances of winning the 2022 World Cup. They will have to regain their belief and confidence in the three matches scheduled before it starts with 2 African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola in September and a friendly fixture against Switzerland in November. To qualify for the 2022 World Cup Ghana just pipped South Africa by scoring more goals to win Group G of the 2nd round CAF qualification. Keeping with not doing things the easy way, Ghana met Nigeria in a two-leg eliminator for World Cup qualification and beat them on the away goal ruling with the score 1 – 1 on aggregate.

Uruguay

It has been a fruitful 2022 so far for Uruguay as they remain unbeaten having played 7 games, winning 6 of them. Their form was a total contradiction in 2021 when Uruguay lost 4 games in a row in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers that will have sent the alarm bells ringing. However, with their much-improved form this year, they will be going into the 2022 World Cup full of confidence. Over the past 12 months, Uruguay has played a total of 15 matches winning 8, drawing 3 and losing 4 games.

Ghana and Uruguay have only played each other in an international game once before. This important game was played in the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa. Both teams had reached the knockout phase and faced each other in the quarter-finals. The game ended with penalties after both teams could not find a winner during normal time and extra time, following goals from Diego Forlán for Uruguay and Suleyman Muntari for Ghana. Uruguay went on to win 4 – 2 on penalties. Let us hope this group stage game will be equally nail-biting over the 90 minutes.

Team Overviews & Player Profiles

Ghana

The World Cup is always a place and an opportunity for young up-and-coming stars to make their mark internationally and increase their stock. Mohammed Kudus is one such player who may provide an unknown attacking threat to the Uruguayans. At only 22 years of age, he is an attacking midfielder who joined Ajax in 2020 and has won the Eredivisie for the past two seasons with them. His international record is still immature but having represented Ghana on 16 occasions he has already scored 5 goals. Uruguay should be wary of this young talent who was included in the IFFHS CAF Youth Team of the Year in 2020.

Often the national managers will want to select experienced players who have already represented their country. However, a good start to the 2022/2023 season may see some new names enter national squads with the potential to make their international debut in the World Cup or shortly beforehand. Mohammed Salisu is 23 years old and currently plays for Southampton as a centre-back. He has held back on making his international debut and wanted to focus on making a concrete start to his professional club career. He is 6ft 3 in (191cm) and at a young age will have no fear in marking the likes of Suarez or Cavani as Ghana aim to shut Uruguay out.

Uruguay

There is an abundance of experience in central defence for the Uruguayans. Not only is there the most capped Uruguayan international Diego Godín, but also his defensive partner José María Giménez. Playing for Atlético Madrid since 2013, Giménez has made 175 appearances for them, twice winning La Liga and also the UEFA Europa League in 2017/2018. He has now played in 2 World Cups and the Copa América 4 times where he was selected in the Team of the Tournament in 2019. Together with the 159 caps earned by Diego Godín, Giménez adds another 78 that includes 8 goals. The pair will have a great understanding and Ghana may be looking towards their pace to try and break the Uruguay rear-guard.

The Ghanaians will not be beaten without the opposition having attributes such as pace, stamina and high levels of work rate. Frederico Valverde is a central midfielder who can also play on the wing and he is just the ticket to help Uruguay beat Ghana. In 2017 he joined Real Madrid and has now made over 100 appearances for them contributing to winning La Liga twice and the Champions League in 2021/2022. He is now becoming a mainstay in the Uruguayan team and has made 42 international appearances while scoring 4 goals.

A True Test for a Revenge Seeking Ghana

Uruguay will go into the game as favourites to win the final group game of Group H. However, Ghana will not be there just to make up the numbers. Uruguay has shown good form during 2022 while Ghana will be seeking revenge against a team that knocked them out on penalties in the 2010 World Cup. Portugal and South Korea will be playing in the other final round game of Group H. The teams will be fighting to finalise the Group H standings and determine which team will qualify for the round of 16. In the round of 16, the top two teams from Group H will play the top two teams that qualify from Group G. This means potential fixtures against Switzerland, Cameroon, Brazil or Serbia. While enjoying all the action, don’t forget that here at mr.play there are masses of betting markets for you to choose from during the 2022 World Cup.
