The Route to the Quarterfinals

England

In Group B, England began their World Cup campaign with an impressive 6-2 victory over Iran. The match showed the world that England have talent in their starting line-up but also have players on the bench that are ready to come on and make an impact.

The second match in the group stage was played between England and the United States. In this fixture, England were far more cautious and failed to get forward too much. The match finished 0-0 and the best chances fell to the United States. Interestingly, England have never beat the United States at a World Cup. Nonetheless, the English national team had gained a point and were closer to finishing first.

In the final group stage match, England played against Wales. After a goalless first-half, England took the lead through a wicked direct freekick. The opening goal allowed England to play with more confidence on the ball, leading to a 3-0 win over the Welsh national team.

This set up a tie between England and Senegal in the round of 16. Having won their group with seven points, England were playing the Afcon Champions that managed to finish second with six points. ‘The Three Lions’ were too good for Senegal, defeating them by three goals to nil. Currently, England are the top scorers at the 2022 World Cup, bagging a total of 12 goals in four games.

France

The French national football team are aiming to become the third team in history to win the World Cup for two successive tournaments. The first time this was ever done was in 1934 and 1938 by Italy, who won it on home soil and in France. The second time the feat was achieved was in 1958 and 1962, when Brazil won the trophy in Sweden and Chile.

The manager of France, Didier Deschamps, will be aiming to secure this feat for his nation. He has successfully navigated his team through the group stage and round of 16. In fact, France were the first team to qualify for the knockout stages, having won both of their opening two matches. In the first game, the French national team beat Australia 4-1. Their star player, Kylian Mbappé, opening his goal scoring account on that day.

In the second fixture, France defeated Denmark 2-1 with both of the goals scored by Mbappé. The young 23-year-old Paris Saint Germain striker had continued to impress and is the driving force for France. The final group stage game resulted in a 1-0 loss to Tunisia. It did not matter as France still finished first of their group.

In the round of 16, France played against Poland and defeated the team 3-1. Two of the goals for France were scored by Kylian Mbappé. His contribution has left him with five goals in the opening four games. He is at the top of the goal scoring charts with the second played players only having three goals apiece.

Team Overviews & Player Profiles

England

The captain and talisman for England is Tottenham Hotspurs striker, Harry Kane. At the 2022 World Cup, Harry Kane did not hit the back of the net until the 3-0 win over Senegal in the round of 16. However, despite not scoring in the opening three matches, the captain provided three assists to his teammates.

Kane has proven himself to be one of the best forwards in the world. At the 2018 World Cup, he won the golden boot by scoring an unmatched six goals. In the 2021 Euros, Kane scored four goals for England. He is currently the second highest goal scorer for the Three Lions with 52 goals. Only Wayne Rooney has more goals, having scored 53.

Could we see Kane score against France and equal the total number of international goals for his country? Will Kane score a brace and announce himself as the all-time leading goal scorer for England? We will find all of this out on Saturday.

France

Les Bleus are not a one-man-team, but their main player and contributor is Kylian Mbappé. As mentioned above, he is the top scorer of the World Cup so far and has also been exceptional in winning games for France. However, he is the only problem that the English defense have to worry about.

At the head of the spear, Olivier Giroud is leading the line for France. In the 2018 World Cup, Giroud had an impressive record of starting every single match for France but failing to score a goal. That did not bother the player, as he still received a World Cup winner’s medal.

In Qatar, that has all changed. Giroud is becoming the main focal point for France and has already scored three goals. He is chipping in with the goals, wherever Mbappé is failing to do so. He could be the difference between England and France on Saturday.

A Fierce Rivalry

England and France have met before on eight separate occasions. Both England and France have won three of the meetings, as the other two have ended as draws.

In World Cup meetings, England have only ever met France twice and defeated them in 1966 and 1982. The most recent meeting between the two nations was in 2017, where France defeated England 3-2 with a man down.
