Canada v Morocco World Cup Group F Betting Guide

Canada and Morocco will both have already played Belgium and Croatia in Group F. The question is, will they still have something to play for in their final group game to try to qualify for the round of 16? If Canada or Morocco achieved favourable results in their first two games, this match will be massive as they seek to further their 2022 World Cup campaign. Canada versus Morocco will be played on Thursday 1st December at the Al Thumama Stadium. In the world rankings, Canada is rated as the 43rd best national team in the world while Morocco is currently the 22nd best.

The Teams’ Routes to the World Cup

Canada

It has been a busy 12 months for the Canadian national team having played 16 international matches. The majority of these games were CONCACAF 3rd round World Cup qualification fixtures plus a couple of Nations League matches. Of the 16 matches, Canada won 9, drew 4 and lost 3. What helped Canada qualify for the World Cup was an unbeaten run of games during qualification that started on the 2nd September 2021 with a 1 – 1 home draw against Honduras, ending 24th March 2022 with a 1 – 0 away loss to Costa Rica. Before the 2022 World Cup commences, Canada will need to consider organising some friendly matches in preparation for their first group matches, starting with a game against Belgium on 23rd November.

Morocco

Similar to the Canadians, Morocco has also played a lot of international fixtures during the past 12 months. In total, they have played 20 fixtures that included World Cup qualification, the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), 2023 AFCON qualification, the Arab Cup and a friendly. During this period, they have won 15, drew 3 and lost 2 matches. Morocco went on an amazing 36-game unbeaten run with matches ending after 90 minutes (excluding extra time and penalties) that started in October 2019 with a 3 – 0 win against Algeria and ended with a loss in the 2021 AFCON quarter-finals against Egypt in a 2 – 1 loss after extra time. They have two friendlies arranged in September in preparation for the 2022 World Cup against Chile and Paraguay. In the 2022 CAF World Cup qualification, Morocco won all their games in the 2nd round group stage, scoring 20 goals and conceding 1. In the third round two-legged eliminator, Morocco beat DR Congo 5 – 2 to comfortably qualify for Qatar.

Canada has played Morocco three times in the past and the North Africans have won twice while the other match ended in a draw. The teams last met in a friendly in 2016 where Morocco ran out 4 – 0 winners.

Team Overviews & Player Profiles

Canada

To protect the attacks from Morocco reaching the Canadian defence Stephen Eustáquio will have a job to do as a defensive midfielder. The 25-year-old could have potentially represented Portugal but elected to play for Canada instead. He has played most of his club football in Portugal but also had experience playing in Mexico. He has made a permanent switch to Porto with who he won the Primera Liga in 2021/2022 while on loan. He has now represented Canada on 24 occasions, scoring 3 goals.

If the Moroccans manage to break through the defence of Canada they will have to get past their towering goalkeeper, Milan Borjan. Standing at 6ft 5in (195cm) he will also offer leadership on the pitch as he is the captain of Red Star Belgrade having made over 150 appearances for the club. He is a 5-time Serbian Superliga winner and was awarded a place in the Superliga team of the season in 2018/2019. Making his debut for Canada in 2010 he has earned himself a place as a regular starter and has been rewarded with 65 international caps making him the 9th most capped Canadian of all time.

Morocco

Defence can turn to attack with one of the best right-backs in world football. Achraf Hakimi is still only 23 years old and already has 51 caps for Morocco, scoring an impressive 8 goals. Already in 2022, he has represented them in 11 games, scoring 3 times. He has already played football in German, Italian and French football where he is currently contracted to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). His record is further enhanced by having won the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid, Serie A with Inter Milan and Ligue 1 with PSG. He is an attacking full-back and will cause the Canadians some problems as he is fast, agile and has excellent dribbling attributes. For the past two seasons, he has been named the best Moroccan football player abroad.

The Moroccans will want their strikers to be firing on all cylinders when facing Canada. Munir El-Haddadi may be one of those that will make a difference on the day. A player with great composure on the ball, a hatful of tricks, speed and useful at set-pieces he has gathered 11 international caps and scored 2 goals. The forward has played for Barcelona where he is a 2-time winner of La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. With Sevilla, he has won the UEFA Europa League.

Potentially a Crucial Game or Both Teams

Will there still be something to play for in the final Group F game between Canada and Morocco? Each team may need a win to have the chance to reach the round of 16. The other game to be played simultaneously in Group F will be Croatia v Belgium. These games will determine the final standings in Group F to decide which teams will play the first and second-placed teams from Group E. This can mean potential matchups from Group F in the round of 16 with either Germany, Japan, Spain or Costa Rica.
