Route to the World Cup
Nicknamed ‘Les Bleus’ or ‘The Blues’, France are no strangers to winning major tournaments. They are previous winners of the UEFA European Championship in 1984 and 2000 and last year they won the UEFA Nations League beating Spain 2 – 1. They also have an impressive record in the World Cup being runners-up in 2006 and winning the tournament in 1998 and 2018. The current World Cup champions will be trying to defend the trophy, having won it the last time beating Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium to reach the final. In the final, they overcame Croatia 4 – 2 to win the World Cup for the second time in their history. France have only failed to reach the World Cup on six occasions and this will be their 7th successive appearance, in what will be the 16th time they have qualified for the tournament.
It is only the second time in their history that Denmark has qualified for two consecutive World Cups. The first appearance came in the Mexico 1986 World Cup finals and the first time they qualified for consecutive tournaments was in 1998 and 2002. It was the 1998 World Cup held in France where Denmark had their best finish, reaching the quarterfinals with star players such as Peter Schmeichel, Michael Laudrup and Brian Laudrup. They were knocked out in a scintillating game that ended 3 – 2 in favour of Brazil who went on to finish the tournament as runners-up. Last time in 2018, Denmark reached the round of 16 before being eliminated once again. This time by the runners-up Croatia and Denmark agonisingly lost on penalties when the match finished 1 - 1 after extra time.
